About Platinum
Platinum, the “Rolls Royce” of precious metals, is the perfect setting for many gemstones, offering both durability and unparalleled beauty. Its icy white brilliance makes it a perfect accent to rubies, sapphires and especially diamonds. It’s strength is ideal for holding gems firmly in place.
The platinum used in jewelry has usually been mixed (alloyed) with another metal. Most jewelry is 95% pure platinum, alloyed with 5% iridium or palladium. Look for these marks of quality on all platinum jewelry:
White and yellow gold may wear down in time, their more delicate composition broken down slightly each time they are scratched or polished. In fact, pronged settings may require reinforcement with additional gold to ensure their longevity. But sturdy platinum is chip- and splinter-resistent, providing a safe and secure setting for gemstones, cameos, etc.
Although platinum is tough, it can scratch and may also develop a unique patina after long wear. To return platinum to its original brightness, a professional jeweler’s polishing is needed. But, there’s plenty of “home care” that you can do to keep your platinum sparkling.
CARING FOR PLATINUM
Soak platinum in a mild solution of soap and warm water for a few minutes. With a soft-bristled brush, gently scrub the platinum, paying particular attention to nooks and crannies that may be tarnished or discolored.
Allow to air dry before returning to a velvet or other soft fabric pouch or box.
